WILD RIVERS OF MARINETTE COUNTY
The counties of Northeast Wisconsin abound with pristine waterways, including vast stretches untouched by human development. The Pike River, our studio namesake, as well as the Peme Bon Won (called the Pemene by locals) and Peshtigo Rivers share the distinction of flowing and cascading through rugged granite country. To the delight of landscape photographers these three rivers boast 14 waterfalls, and countless rapids, as well as many miles of quiet water. Marinette County is known as the Waterfall Capital of Wisconsin.
The Pike and Pemene flow into the Menomonee River which is our border with Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a land of unlimited photographic possibilities. The Peshtigo flows into Lake Michigan's Green Bay. Just west of the headwaters of the Peshtigo are the headwaters of the mighty Wolf River. Twenty four of its 225 miles are designated as National Scenic River. A short drive northwest of Pike River Studio, the Pine and Popple Rivers flow wild through Florence and Forest Counties. These two rivers, along with the Pike have been protected by the state since 1965 under the Wild Rivers Act, insuring these rivers will always run wild.
Pike River Studio is perfectly located at the heart of all this flowing water, and we enjoy teaching workshops and leading photo tours to the shores of these rivers and to the finest lakes and forests in the area.
